Havre de Grace Decoy Museum |
Discover the folk art of decoy making traditions
at the Havre de Grace
Decoy Museum. There are remarkably life-like figures of famous
Chesapeake Bay decoy carvers. A large as life wax figure of R.
Madison Mitchell who lived 1901 to 1993 greets you and tells
you in his own voice about decoy carving by means of a recording.
R. Madison Mitchell is universally recognized as one of the masters
of the Havre de Grace style of decoy carving. A display of Madison's work shop with his friends, all in life-like talking wax figures, demonstrate how he worked. It appears exactly as is was during his lifetime. The Decoy Museum is open 11 to 4 seven days a week, closed major holidays. Each Saturday and Sunday, volunteer decoy carvers demonstrate their craft. You can ask questions and possibly begin a new hobby. Madison is only one of the carvers whose works are displayed. There are about 2,700 carvings and related decoy objects displayed at the museum, demonstrating the work of over 300 regional decoy makers. |
